Introduction to the equipment you will need for salmon fishing
Basic equipment
To fish for salmon, you need certain basic equipment. Here are some of the things you will typically use:
- #7, #8 or #9 fly rod
- Reel with #7, #8 or #9 fly line, equipped with a spare spool or line
- Tapered leader and/or leader material between 10 and 15 lbs test
- Flies
- Fly box
- Nipper
- Waders and wading boots
- Salmon fishing net
- Sunglasses

- PFD (especially if you are fishing from a boat)
- Wading staff (if you have difficulty crossing the river)
- Cooler
Clothing
Be prepared! The weather can be unpredictable on the river.
Here is a list of clothing to plan for your outings:
- Hat
- Windbreaker jacket
- Thermal underwear (first layer) adapted to the weather
- Sun shirt
- Warm sweater
- Lightweight down coat or similar type of jacket
- Comfortable pants
- Spare socks
- Gloves
- Tuque
