INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES

If you don’t know anything about salmon fishing or if you have already been introduced to it but would like to expand on your knowledge and experience, we recommend that you take part in an introductory activity.

Alone, with friends or with your family, you can find the right course for you in Quebec’s rivers! There are a wide range of affordable fly fishing courses available to everyone, young or old, beginner or experienced.

 

The following topics are addressed during introductory activities:

• Atlantic salmon and brook trout life cycle
• Equipment and types of flies to use
• Casting techniques and knots
• How to navigate the river
• Comment se déplacer en rivière
• Safety rules, code of ethics and angler rotation
• Where and how to wade and canoe fish
• Catching and releasing salmon

THE FQSA MENTORSHIPS

Over the years, the FQSA’s mentorship program has allowed more than 650 people to learn about the joys of salmon fishing, to meet other enthusiasts, to discover new rivers, to create a network of contacts and friends, and to share with seasoned anglers.

The mentors, about fifty in number, had the opportunity to demonstrate that the world of salmon is not as “exclusive” as some claim, by generously passing on their knowledge, skills, but above all, their passion for salmon and fishing.

As a result, we are seeing an increase in the number of salmon anglers emerging from this program, who in turn are passing on their knowledge and love of the sport to their friends and family.

Salmon fishing guides

The role of the guide is to accompany the fishermen on the river. They will adapt to the level of experience of their clients in order to give them technical, ethical and general advice on the river fished.

WHY USE A GUIDE?

The services of a guide can be very helpful in increasing your chances of catching a fish, especially when you are new to the world of salmon fishing.

Atlantic salmon fishing techniques are difficult to compare to those of other species of fish. It is therefore important to make sure that you have a guide on your first trips. This will certainly save you a few years of trial and error.

Your guide will be able to give you his or her knowledge of the river in question, advise you on the flies to use, show you the casting techniques, and inform you of the rules of ethics specific to the river, to name a few.

 

WHERE TO FIND YOUR GUIDE

Most river management organizations have publicly accessible lists of all guides who are authorized to work in their territory. These are usually available on their website.

OBLIGATIONS OF THE FISHING GUIDE

All fishing guides working on salmon rivers must have a business permit issued by the Ministère de l'Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs (MELCCFP). They must also be covered by a civil liability insurance.

Before choosing your guide, make sure that he or she is authorized to guide on the river you wish to visit. To do so, contact the river manager.
